Brett grew up in the Orange County area and attended Rancho Alamitos High School. During his
tenure as a Vaquero, he played outfield and pitched for four years on varsity. His senior year he
was voted Garden Grove League MVP and batted .515. He also pitched 70 innings with 78
strikeouts and an ERA of 2.00. He set a school record with 50 hits and a .515 average in a
season. He also played point guard on the basketball team and was named the Senior Male
Athlete of the Year.
Following his high school career, Brett started his college career at Saddleback College. As a
sophomore, he was voted 1st Team All-Conference. He was named a Scholar Baller Athlete, set
the single season record for triples, and was eventually inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Brett then accepted a scholarship from the University of California at Santa Barbara. As a
Gaucho, Brett was a First Team All-Big West selection his junior year and was also named to the
All-Region Team. That year he hit .381, 90 hits, 30 rbi, 54 runs which was enough to earn him
the batting title in the Big West Conference. He also hit 9 triples that season, which still stands as
the single season record.
Brett’s college career ended in June 2012 where he was selected in the 10th round of the MLB
draft by the Oakland Athletics. Brett spent the next seven seasons in the A’s organization,
eventually making it to AAA his final year in affiliate ball. In 662 games in the minor leagues,
he racked up 635 hits, 335 runs, 130 doubles, and 100 stolen bases.
Brett now uses his extensive experience in baseball at every level, to help mentor and develop
the players at CDM in pursuit of their baseball goals. This will be Coach Vertigans 5 th year on the
CDM baseball staff.
