Brett grew up in the Orange County area and attended Rancho Alamitos High School. During his tenure as a Vaquero, he played outfield and pitched for four years on varsity. During his senior year, he was voted Garden Grove League MVP and batted .515. He also pitched 70 innings with 78 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.00. He set a school record with 50 hits and a .515 batting average in a season. He also played point guard on the basketball team and was named the Senior Male Athlete of the Year.

Following his high school career, Brett started his college career at Saddleback College. As a sophomore, he was voted First Team All-Conference. He was named a Scholar Baller Athlete, set the single-season record for triples, and was eventually inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Brett then accepted a scholarship to the University of California, Santa Barbara. As a Gaucho, Brett was a First Team All-Big West selection during his junior year and was also named to the All-Region Team. That year, he recorded a .381 batting average with 90 hits, 30 RBIs, and 54 runs scored, which was enough to earn him the batting title in the Big West Conference. He also hit nine triples that season, which still stands as the single-season record.

Brett’s college career ended in June 2012 when he was selected in the 10th round of the MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics. Brett spent the next seven seasons in the A’s organization, eventually making it to Triple-A during his final year in affiliated baseball. In 662 games in the minor leagues, he recorded 635 hits, 335 runs, 130 doubles, and 100 stolen bases.

Brett now uses his extensive experience in baseball at every level to help mentor and develop the players at CDM in pursuit of their baseball goals. This will be Coach Vertigan’s fifth year on the CDM baseball staff.
