Coach Gerakos played at Fullerton College from 1969–70. He was drafted by the Oakland A’s in 1970. Mike declined the A’s offer and attended UCLA, where he played from 1971–72. He was then drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 1972 draft. He signed and played in the Twins organization for two and a half years. Coach Gerakos was a special player, and this is evident in the fact that he is in the Baseball Hall of Fame at both Fullerton College and UCLA.

After his playing career ended, Mike became an assistant coach at UCLA for six seasons. From there, he became the head coach at UCI from 1981–1992. UCI later decided to fold the program, and Mike took a job at University High School, where he taught and coached from 1993–2018. During his time at Uni, he served as a teacher, activities director, dean of attendance, and baseball coach. He was selected as the University High School Teacher of the Year in 2002 and the IUSD Teacher of the Year in 2012.

Mike retired in June of 2018 from University High School and was coaxed out of retirement by Coach McCaffrey to join the baseball staff at CDM. Coach Gerakos is thoroughly enjoying the CDM players and coaches. Coach Gerakos lives in Orange with his wife, Kathy, and loves spending time with his grandkids.
